Defense Department Report Concludes Hegseth Put Military Personnel in Danger with Signal Conversation.

A highly anticipated Department of Defense report has concluded that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth breached official protocols by disclosing secret information in a Signal messaging chat, as stated by a source familiar with the report.

Details of the Event

The chat group in dispute contained particulars about a scheduled air attack in Yemen targeting Houthi militants. This discussion was revealed after a journalist for the Atlantic was added as a participant.

Other officials in the group reportedly included Senator JD Vance, CIA director John Ratcliffe, and former security advisor Mike Waltz. The report focused solely on the conduct of Hegseth, as the other participants do not work at the Pentagon.

Signal is a commercially offered communication application that was not authorized for transmitting classified information.

Potential Threat to Troops

The inspector general's report found that the information shared by Hegseth was classified and could have endangered the lives of US service members if it had been intercepted by a foreign enemy force.

Notably, the report also noted that Hegseth had the ability to declassify the material he shared, though it was unclear whether he formally exercised that authority.

Secretary's Response

The informed individual said that Hegseth declined an interview by the investigators. Instead, he provided a short written response.

In his response, Hegseth claimed he only shared details that would not have endangered personnel or jeopardized the mission. He added that he possessed the authority to declassify material and viewed the investigation to be partisan.

Future Actions

The finalized investigation has been shared with lawmakers. An unclassified version is anticipated to be released in the coming days.
